The Story of G-BOAC

Delivered to British Airways on 13 February 1976, G-BOAC was the second Concorde to join the UK fleet — but she is considered the flagship, carrying the legendary BOAC registration (British Overseas Airways Corporation) that predated the formation of British Airways itself.

Her first flight was on 27 February 1975, and she quickly racked up a series of remarkable milestones. On 1 September 1975, Alpha Charlie became the first aircraft to make four Atlantic crossings in a single day. On 24 May 1976, she was the first Concorde in commercial service to land on US soil, touching down at Washington Dulles Airport after months of diplomatic negotiations between the UK and US governments.

On 19 December 1985, G-BOAC set the highest recorded ground speed for a commercial airliner — an astonishing 1,488 mph. To mark 10 years in service, four British Airways Concordes, including Alpha Charlie, flew in formation over the Atlantic — a moment that remains one of aviation's most spectacular sights.

Before entering airline service, G-BOAC was used by BAC to complete airworthiness certification, including air conditioning checks and auto-landing trials, before route-proving duties across Bahrain, Singapore, and beyond. She was returned to BAC in 1976 after 141 flights for refurbishment, then re-entered service as one of the most celebrated aircraft in history.
