Pilot Survival & Safety Gear — Be Prepared Before You Need It

Aviation safety doesn't end at the pre-flight check. For pilots flying over remote terrain, open water, or in areas where search and rescue response times are long, personal survival and emergency equipment is a critical layer of preparation. Our Survival & Safety collection brings together the gear that pilots, flight schools, and aircraft operators rely on to stay safe when things don't go to plan.

Locator Beacons

A personal locator beacon (PLB) is the single most important piece of survival equipment a pilot can carry. In the event of a forced landing in a remote area, a registered PLB transmits your position to search and rescue satellites, dramatically reducing response time. For New Zealand pilots flying over mountainous or coastal terrain, a PLB should be considered essential equipment.

Survival Kits and Gear

A well-stocked survival kit gives you the tools to manage the critical first hours after an unplanned landing — shelter, fire starting, signalling, water treatment, and first aid. Purpose-built aviation survival kits are compact enough to fit in a flight bag and comprehensive enough to cover the scenarios most likely to affect GA pilots in the New Zealand environment.

CO Detectors

Carbon monoxide is an invisible, odourless threat that can incapacitate a pilot before they realise anything is wrong. A cockpit CO detector provides continuous monitoring and early warning, giving you time to act before impairment sets in. It's one of the simplest and most affordable safety additions to any aircraft.

Motion Sickness Aids, Water Treatment & Emergency Lighting

Motion sickness aids help pilots and passengers manage nausea during turbulent conditions or when transitioning to instrument flying. Water treatment solutions including filters and purification tablets ensure access to safe drinking water in a survival scenario. Emergency lighting — from torches to headlamps and chemical light sticks — keeps you operational after dark and improves your visibility to rescuers.

Pilot Shop is New Zealand's specialist source for pilot survival and safety equipment. Build your kit before you need it — because preparation is the best emergency plan.
