The flight that made the Gimli Glider famous
On 23 July 1983, a fuel miscalculation left the Boeing 767 known as the Gimli Glider without power from either engine while airborne. Captain Robert Pearson and First Officer Maurice Quintal guided the aircraft to a successful landing at an abandoned race track in Gimli, Manitoba. All 69 people on board survived. Their handling of the emergency remains a powerful example of quick thinking, flying skill, and the remarkable capabilities of the aircraft and its crew.
